Sacred Heart Catholic School
Niagara Falls, ON
A four classroom addition, gymnasium expansion,
new administrative offices and ancilliary spaces
for a Catholic elementary school originally constructed
in 1958, with additions in 1963 and 1965. The school
is a single story structure totalling 2,287 m2 (24,625
sf). The existing building, at 1,675 m2 (18,020 sf),
was already near the limit for unsprinklered combustible
construction. Therefore a firewall was introduced,
separating the new classrooms and opening the potential
for further expansion.
The school is located in a mature neighborhood, directly
across a two lane street from a large municipal park.
The large trees along the front of the building were
preserved by negotiating with the City to permit
a bus lay by along the front of the property rather
than a standard off street bus loop. An "off-street"
loop for passenger cars was created at the south
end of the building for parents to drop off their
children.
