Assyrian Church of the East
Toronto, ON
This 16,600 sf worship
and community centre facility was designed to suit a tight
site overlooking a ravine setting of the Humber River and
the flanking Highway 27. A large copper dome is situated
against these two venues as a silent symbol of the Assyrian
Church to the surrrounding community.
The Church's aesthetical design was to reflect true Assyrian Architecture for
the building's exterior and interior spaces. White and grey masonry massing is
accented with a white precast concrete stepped parapets and blue / terra cotta
accent features provide a brillance to the exterior facade. The building's interior
is arranged to maintain the liturgical values of the Assyrian culture throughout
the 770 seat worship space with a polished granite apse and Sanctuary area. A
650 seat community centre provides a separate venue for their banquets and social
gatherings within the same building. A second floor classroom area provides a
place for cultural education and meeting spaces.
